Setting boundaries with clients, Jessica Patton
Written by Jessica Patton on August 1, 2023
As a hairdresser, it's essential to set boundaries with clients to ensure both you and your client have a positive experience. These boundaries can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance, manage your time effectively, and prevent burnout.
In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for setting boundaries with clients as a hairdresser:

1) Set clear expectations from the start

When you first meet a new client, it's important to set clear expectations about what you can and cannot do. This includes discussing the services you offer, pricing, and your availability. Be upfront about your schedule and let them know when you're available to take appointments, so they don't try to book you outside of your working hours.

2)Respect your own time

As a hairdresser, it can be tempting to take on as many clients as possible to maximize your income. However, this can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Set realistic working hours and stick to them. If a client asks for an appointment outside of your working hours, politely decline and suggest a time that works for you.

3)Don't be afraid to say no

Sometimes, clients may ask for services that you're not comfortable providing. It's important to set boundaries and say no if you feel uncomfortable or unable to do something. For example, if a client asks for a drastic haircut that you don't feel confident doing, suggest they see another hairdresser who specializes in that style.

4) Limit phone calls and messages

It's common for clients to contact their hairdresser outside of working hours for advice or to book appointments. However, it's important to set boundaries around when you're available to take calls and messages. Consider setting aside specific times during the day to respond to client messages and let them know when they can expect to hear back from you.

5)Don't take it personally

As a hairdresser, you may encounter difficult clients who are unhappy with your work. It's important not to take this personally and to set boundaries around how you handle these situations. Remain professional, listen to their concerns, and offer solutions where possible. However, it's also important to know when to walk away from a client who is consistently difficult or disrespectful.

6)Take breaks

Taking breaks throughout the day can help you maintain your energy levels and prevent burnout. Consider scheduling regular breaks in between appointments to rest and recharge. This can help you provide better service to your clients and prevent fatigue from setting in.

7)Be clear about your cancellation policy

It's important to have a cancellation policy in place to protect your time and income. Be clear about your policy from the start and let clients know what the consequences are for cancelling or rescheduling appointments. This can help prevent last-minute cancellations and ensure that your time is respected.

In conclusion, setting boundaries with clients as a hairdresser is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, managing your time effectively, and preventing burnout. By setting clear expectations, respecting your own time, saying no when necessary, limiting phone calls and messages, not taking things personally, taking breaks, and being clear about your cancellation policy, you can ensure a positive experience for both you and your clients.
